Over 100 years ago Mark Twain was quoted as saying “A lie will travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting its shoes on”. Fast forward to the current world of social-media-connected citizens and this statement sounds blatantly obvious; but it would not have been as apparent a century ago.
In a similar way, Warren Bennis was famously quoted in 1991 as predicting “the factory of the future will have just two employees; one man and one dog. The man will be there to feed the dog. The dog will be there to keep the man from touching the equipment.” Fast forward to today and this is reality.
Machine Learning has been around in various forms ever since English mathematician Alan Turing gave a lecture on the subject in 1947. But its immersion into daily life has rapidly accelerated in recent years and we all surreptitiously benefit. Think about the last time you accepted a suggested Netflix movie, Spotify music, or Amazon purchase. Regardless of whether you accepted or rejected the suggestion, the machine now knows a little bit more about you.
