Objective: finite capacity planning and improved service rate

June 9th, 2004

"L'Européenne d’Embouteillage” is the product of a joint-venture that took place in 1996 between the Cadbury-Schweppes group and the Benedetto company (Italian bottler No. 1 with 2. billion bottles a year, and No. 4 worldwide on the bottled water market). Since 1998 “l’Européenne d’Embouteillage” has been specialising in the production of spring water under the brand name “Telle Quelle” (producing 1 bilion litres a year) and currently employs 266 people, spread over 4 production sites located in La Courneuve, Mézieux, Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne (near Avignon) and Donnery (near Orléans) in France.

Confronted with various constraints such as production organization for the different plants, rationalization and economy of scale, “l’Européenne d’Embouteillage” decided in early 2004 to re-examine its production planning strategy, and called upon DynaSys for finite capacity planning.

‘In 1998 we had an important business with only one production site. Today we have 4 industrial sites with an ever-increasing number of customer references and volumes, confides Humbert Josquin, Logistics Director for “l’Européenne d’Embouteillage”. With the joint-venture extension (350 million more litres produced since March of 2004, due to the acquisition of the Orangina brand) and the massive heat wave of the summer of 2003, our systems were all rigorously tested.

He adds, ‘Our objective today consists of guaranteeing an optimal rate of service, while better managing our stocks. Limited up until this point to an infinite capacity planning through the ERP with which we were equipped (SAP), it became essential for us to find a reliable and high-performance tool able to help us reorient our production and meet all of our needs, while integrating with the existing ERP.’

At the beginning of 2004, “l’Européenne d’Embouteillage” carried out a brief market round. DynaSys, Intentia (Movex), Ortems and SAP (APO) editors were among those consulted. Several weeks later, the DynaSys planning solution was finally retained.

‘Several reasons motivated this choice, continues Humbert Josquin. We must remember that Cadbury France has already relied on the SKEP solutions from DynaSys for over ten years to centralize its planning – a concrete element in addition to the image we already had of DynaSys, as the uncontested leader in the field of planning. In the end, the DynaSys editor managed to convince us that he would be able to respond to all of our trade problematics within 3 months, and thus permit us to get operational with our planning very quick.’

‘Our main objective consists of improving our service rate by securing our production plan and better mastering our resources. Today we are very optimistic about being able to reach these objectives.’ Following a 25-day integration phase, the five users who would operate the DynaSys solution benefited from six days of training.

‘Our mission was very clear, adds Ariel Weil, General Manager Assistant of DynaSys: enable “l’Européenne d’Embouteillage” to be operational in less than 3 months thanks to a customized planning solution. Mission accomplished! With our trade approach and our solid experience, we are now able to quickly and efficiently respond to all of our customers’ problematics . Actually, the bottling sector is a domain that we perfectly master, since famous names like Nestlé Waters (Perrier, Vittel), San Pellegrino, Welch’s, Coca-Cola and even Hennessy already rely on our tools worldwide.’
